Approved financing for the rehabilitation of Dock 1 North at Leixões Port

APDL's application was approved on December 20th

"Reinforcement of Dock 1 North of the Port of Leixões for Dual Use and Rail Connectivity / Reinforcement of the North Quay of Dock 1 of the Port of Leixões", in the scope of the Call 2022 for Military Mobility of the Connecting Europe Facility - Transport, by the Executive Agency for Climate, Environment and European Infrastructures (CINEA), which foresees the rehabilitation of the Quay.

The budget for this work is 25.6 million euros, and the Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo, S. A., obtains the program's contribution of 50% of the value, or 12.8 million euros.

For Nuno Araújo, Chairman of the APDL Board, the approval of this application "is of unparalleled significance, given the fact that it will allow the restoration of conditions for the full use of a strategic Dock of the Port of Leixões, with its associated competitive advantages, recovering an important asset for the operation and reception capacity of larger vessels," adding that "this intervention will contribute to business diversification and increase the installed capacity of this port infrastructure.

The replacement of the current pier will allow for the alignment and a continuous berthing front on the north side of the Port of Leixões downstream of the mobile bridge, the preparation for the deepening of the area next to the pier from -10 meters to -12 meters (zero hydrological level), the widening of the "mouth" of the adjoining Ro-Ro ramp to 36 meters and the strengthening of the capacity of the embankment to support the pier, from 5 tons per m2 to 8 tons per m2.

This intervention will provide the Port of Leixões with increased capacity to receive larger vessels, to reinforce the reception of vessels from all market segments (containers, general fractional cargo, bulk cargo and Ro-Ro cargo), to guarantee the requirements of military mobility and to increase agility and operational capacity.

The investment in Dock 1 North is part of the Rehabilitation and Modernization Program of the port cluster managed by APDL, which aims to modernize and qualify this port infrastructure.
