River monitoring team with a new means of transportation
The team of kingfishermen that daily walks and monitors the river Leça has, since today, two electric bicycles.
Offered by the parish councils of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões to the Leça Corridor Association, the two bicycles ensure a more convenient and faster transportation along the route.
The Leça River, which begins in Santo Tirso, at an altitude of 475 m, and flows into Matosinhos, has a length of about 46 kilometers.
Considered for decades one of the most polluted rivers in Europe, it has been the stage of a relevant regeneration program in recent years.
The kingfisher team, it should be remembered, is made up of employees from the four municipalities that make up the Leça River Corridor Association - Matosinhos, Maia, Valongo, and Santo Tirso.
The main objectives of this intermunicipal association are the ecological recovery of the river and the landscape, cultural and socio-economic enhancement of the territory that it crosses, from source to mouth, as well as the promotion of knowledge, new opportunities for soft mobility, leisure and stay along the river, environmental awareness, enhancement of contact with nature, ecosystem services and outdoor life.
The bicycles delivery ceremony took place today at the headquarters of the Associação Corredor do Leça, at Lionesa Business Hub, in Leça do Balio. Present were the mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, the councilwoman for the environment, Manuela Álvares, the president of the union of parishes of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões, Pedro Gonçalves, and the executive director of the Associação Corredor do Leça, Artur Branco.
