Custóias celebrated the 25th of April yesterday with the 44th Liberty Race and Walk, one of the oldest competitions of its kind in Portugal
As part of the commemorations of the 49th anniversary of the 25th of April, the Liberty Race and Walk, organised by the Union of the Parishes of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões, had 1200 athletes taking part in this edition.
During the morning, the streets of Custóias received the event that for 4 decades has continued to mark the national calendar of road races. In the North, it is the most emblematic Liberty Race. One of the important aspects about this race is that registration is free, giving everyone the opportunity to participate.
Several youth races took place in the various classes: Benjamins A; Benjamins B; Infantiles; Beginners and Juveniles. The courses varied between: 800; 1600; 2000 and 3000 metres.
Still composing the sporting morning was the main race with a distance of 10 KM and the 5 KM walk, especially suitable for families and children, for all those who like to walk and socialise while doing physical exercise.
Athletes from all over the country participated, representing several clubs and also individuals.
The races were held in an urban circuit, through the main arteries of the Custóias parish.
At the same time, foodstuffs were collected when the dorsal was handed over to the A nossa Missão Association, the A Família Girassol Association and the Conferência Vicentina de São Tiago de Custóias, which support needy families with foodstuffs.
On this 25th of April, the collective joy and celebration once again took to the streets. The pleasure of participation keeps alive the "Freedom Run", which is in its 44th edition, and its symbolism with the values of April, on this day which salutes the 49th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.
