Inaugurated panel alluding to the Portuguese Coastal Way
On the day of the Apostle Santiago, which was marked yesterday, the union of the parishes of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões inaugurated a panel alluding to the Portuguese Coastal Way.
Present was the president of the board, Pedro Gonçalves.
The panel was placed on Rua da Fonte Velha, in Custóias, the only parish in the municipality of Matosinhos dedicated to Santiago and which is part of the Portuguese Way to Santiago-Caminho da Costa.
With a length of 138 kilometers, the route crosses the municipalities of Porto, Matosinhos, Maia, Vila do Conde, Póvoa do Varzim, Esposende, Viana do Castelo, Caminha, Vila Nova de Cerveira and Valença.
In Matosinhos, the 6.05 km route connects the Montes Burgos area to Maia, crossing the Padrão da Légua, Recarei and Custóias areas. Along the way, pilgrims have the opportunity to visit historic sites such as the Ponte de Goimil, in Custóias.
In 2021, the celebrations of Xacobeo, also known as the Jacobean Year, Holy Year or Jubilee Year, were affected by the pandemic and, as such, lasted, by order of Pope Francis, until the end of this year.
The celebration of Xacobeu takes place when the day of the Apostle Santiago, the 25th of July, coincides with a Sunday.
This ritual began in 1122 in Compostela by order of Pope Callisto II, who granted full indulgence to anyone who visited the tomb of the Apostle Santiago.
