The Matosinhos City Hall intends to have, until 2026, the connection to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, in Maia, by metrobus.
The municipality justified to the Lusa agency the option for a metrobus to the airport with faster access and connections to neighboring municipalities of the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP), unlike the Senhor de Matosinhos station. The City Council wants, thus, "a direct connection to the metro transport (at present) and rail network (in the future) in the surroundings of the airport".
"The metro station of Senhor de Matosinhos is 35 minutes from the center of Porto, 1h20 from Póvoa de Varzim and 52 minutes from the center of Maia. In turn, the surroundings of the airport is at a distance of 27, 40 and 35 minutes, respectively," said the municipality in statements to Lusa. It is "this comparative advantage, in addition to proximity, which justifies this preliminary study of the connection to the Metro network to the east and not the south," it added.
Matosinhos' priorities, "in the metropolitan scope, are the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT - known as metrobus) lines to the airport and Boavista, and the subway to the university center via São Mamede de Infesta. There are no technical and financial conditions to insert other priorities that seek to minimize inter-municipal travel," said the municipality.
The municipality also mentioned that "Metro do Porto is working on the expansion of the metropolitan network, articulating with the existing network in Maia, Gondomar, Gaia, Vila do Conde and Póvoa", and that the goal of the metrobus is "to make the connection to the existing network".
