Leixões Port pioneer in technology ECOncrete

Breakwater Tretapod Units Support Marine Biodiversity

APDL will implement, for the first time in Portugal, the ECOncrete technology in the tetrapod units that will be placed in the Port of Leixões, more specifically in the breakwater.

Produced by Etermar - Engenharia e Construção, S.A., the Tetrapods are model concrete structures, composed of four prominent extensions, or four feet. This format is designed to dissipate the incident energy of the waves and prevent them from moving, because they are embedded and avoid slipping into the water.

The novelty in the production of these 40t ECO-tetrapods is that they were designed using technology from ECOncrete, a supplier of bio-strengthening technology for concrete, which has successfully integrated additives, texturing agents and coatings in the production process of concrete, which will favor the fixation and development of species on the concrete surface of the tetrapods, contributing to increase marine biodiversity, while maintaining the integrity and strength of these massive elements that line the breakwater of the port of Leixões.

For the Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões and Viana do Castelo, this measure is aligned with the Sustainability strategy that APDL is promoting.

For Nuno Araújo, "this is another important measure that corroborates APDL's bet environmental sustainability, because these structures, created with this

this technology, will strengthen the coastal front but also the marine biodiversity

marine biodiversity, i.e. will contribute to the improvement of aquatic ecosystems and their resilience to climate change".

APDL is becoming a pioneer in the use of this technology in the ECO-tetrapods that will be be placed in the breakwater of the Port of Leixões, which is undergoing an extension, a work of great importance to increase the competitiveness of the Port.
