The first section of the metal deck that will ensure the passage of the Metro over the entire length of the Santo Ovídio viaduct was launched this Tuesday
The section transposed Rua dos Arrependidos, "from where it will gradually make its way until reaching Santo Ovídio, something that should happen by the end of the first quarter of next year," says Metro do Porto.
These three modules, of the 23 that compose the viaduct, are being placed in the viaduct according to the incremental launching method, that is, the "pieces" that integrate the structure are slowly sliding from pillar to pillar.
"Basically, it is like a lego that we are putting together and launching", explained Pedro Quintas, the transportation company's engineer, responsible for the expansion of the Yellow Line.
Pedro Quintas also justified the option for this construction method by the fact that it doesn't impose many constraints on the population: "This structure could have been assembled by crane, between each pillar, but we are using this process which, because it is aerial, is less invasive. In other words, it has less impact on road traffic and on the environmental heritage of Quinta do Cisne, next door".
The engineer also emphasized that there is, in this project, "a whole instrumentation that allows measuring displacements and forces", making it possible to "control the whole process step by step".
Metro do Porto indicates that "the construction of the Yellow Line extension is advancing at a good pace" and will be completed by the end of 2023.
