Municipality with more approved European funds

56.9 million in funding for 83 projects.


Matosinhos is the municipality in the country with the highest approved financing from EU funds.

This is what the information portal "+ Transparency" that analyzes the management of public resources of the Portuguese State reveals.

Matosinhos comes in 1st place in the table, with 56.9 million euros of funding. In the TOP 10 follow Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Coimbra, Évora, Funchal, Viana do Castelo, Gondomar, Guimarães and Vila Nova de Famalicão.

In terms of the number of projects approved, the municipality of Matosinhos ranks third, with 83, behind Vila Nova de Gaia (2nd, with 85) and Chaves (1st, with 87).

The projects were approved in areas such as environment, education, housing, social action, mobility, energy efficiency, urban qualification, culture, tourism, among others.

From the list of projects, the two phases of the Leça Green Corridor, the reconversion of the former Real Vinícola and its transformation into the Casa da Arquitectura, the reconversion of the former slaughterhouse into the Innovation Center of Matosinhos, the requalification of the Boa Nova and Abel Salazar high schools, the removal of the asbestos roofs, the renovation of the Matosinhos secondary schools, and the renovation of the Matosinhos secondary schools, the removal of asbestos roofing from schools, the requalification of the coastline walkways, the rehabilitation of several housing developments, the creation of a bicycle path network, the qualification of streets and squares, the expansion of the WWTP for secondary treatment, among many other investments in the municipality.

Regarding energy efficiency in the management of public lighting, efficient LED technology fixtures were installed throughout the territory.

In the chapter on combating climate change, a project is being implemented to protect the coastline and combat coastal erosion, which covers almost the entire coastline of the municipality, over a length of 8 km and includes the implementation of a set of integrated and structuring interventions/actions aimed at coastal protection, reduction or control of the risk of erosion and landscape enhancement.

In addition to the works, community funds financed social projects, including the fight against school failure or support for the homeless population, among many others.
