Number of passengers at the port of Leixões was in May at 31% of the 2019 level

The number of passengers at the port of Leixões was 27,437 through May, representing 31% of the 2019 total. Number for 2022 is higher than the total for the entire year 2021.



The number of passengers at the port of Leixões in Matosinhos, including boardings, landings and transit, was 27,437 through May, representing 31% of the total for 2019, a pre-pandemic year in which the terminal served 88,696 people.

According to figures advanced this Tuesday to Lusa by the Administration of the Ports of Leixões, Douro and Viana do Castelo (APDL), at the end of May the 27,437 passengers served by the terminal far exceeded the 143 recorded until May 2021, when the restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic were in force.

However, the passenger numbers through May of this year already exceeded the 2021 total, since last year the port of Leixões served 8,941 people.

In 2020, the number of passengers had been even lower, at 6,477, a year marked by restrictions on cruise traffic starting in March, in which the industry came to a halt.

As for the Douro waterway, in terms of river passengers between reservoirs, until May this year the number of people served was 42,699, a number that far exceeds the 1,137 recorded until May last year.

In total, 279,151 passengers traveled on the waterway in 2021, 160,897 (58%) of whom on cruises in the same reservoir and at night, 74,438 on day cruises (27%), 33,307 on hotel boats (12%), and 10,151 (4%) on pleasure boats.

In the year 2020, in which due to the Covid-19 pandemic the boats were stopped between March and June/July, 226,333 passengers transited the Douro River, 86.24% less than in 2019, a year in which 1,644,937 tourists traveled on that route, 26.92% more than in 2018.

Last year, the best month for river tourism was August (21.2%), followed by September (16.6%), July (15%) and October (12.9%), having been practically residual in the first quarter.
