Presentation of the book: "Truths without fear, Chronicles of Violence, Trafficking and Organized Crime


"Verdades sem medo, Crónicas Violência, Tráfico e Crime Organizado" is the name of the book by Sérgio Oliveira presented on 29 April, at the Florbela Espanca Municipal Library.

Besides the author, the session was attended by the Minister of Health, Manuel Pizarro, the Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, and the Councillor for Culture, Fernando Rocha.

With a preface by João Goulão, the book has texts about mafia networks, child and woman trafficking, drug business and human organs trafficking, organised crime, violence and terrorism, war business and arms trade, hunger, slavery, rape and ill-treatment, and the hypocrisy of human rights violation.

According to the author, "it is a book that denounces the crimes against humanity, in the hope of a world of peace, justice, freedom and equal rights for all peoples and nations of the world".

Sérgio Oliveira was born in Porto in 1949, he works and lives in Matosinhos. From an early age, he took part in youth, association, political and trade union struggles.

He was a soldier, did his military service in Guinea-Bissau, where he created and participated in a clandestine radio program in Bedanda, was arrested and tortured by the political police of the regime.

He was an autodidact, he read and studied law and justice. He wrote texts, quatrains and popular poetry. He took an active part in the April Revolution, was a candidate for deputy to the Constituent Assembly, a collective bargaining technician in the metalworkers' union, the chemical union and the Office and Services Union.

He began his studies as a working student. He attended law school at the Free University, a course he never finished.

He took part in the fight against corruption and illegalities of the Free University, which was eventually closed down. He was president of the Pro-Faculty of Law Commission of the University of Porto. He worked in special publications in the newspapers O Primeiro de Janeiro and Comércio do Porto.

A columnist for the magazine (sem) Equívocos, he founded, with other professional journalists, Newscoop - Cooperativa de Informação e Comunicação, which owns the magazine Dependências and still runs today. A member of the Associação dos Jornalistas e Homens de Letras do Porto, he is an Honorary Member of the Guantanamo University of Medical Sciences in Cuba.
