June 15, from 10 am to 6 pm, visits to the waterfall, music, traditional games and much more, at the Quinta de Santiago Museum
Today, June 15th, the Quinta de Santiago Museum will be celebrating. Between 10 am and 6 pm, visits to Cascata Leceira, traditional games, music, popular marches, community exhibition of mini-waterfalls alluding to the Festas do Senhor de Matosinhos and arraial radio will be the highlights of another edition of Arraial da Cascata leceira.
After years of interruption due to the pandemic, the arraial is back to celebrate the tradition of popular saints, as well as another anniversary of the donation of Cascata Leceira to the museum, by the artisan José Moreira, which has since been permanently visible to the public, at Casa do Bosque.
The event will take place from morning until late afternoon and includes a set of activities for school audiences, and with special needs, with the collaboration of various school and disability support institutions in the county.
The program includes guided visits to Cascata Leceira, traditional Portuguese games, presentation of popular marches, community show of mini-waterfalls alluding to the Festas do Senhor de Matosinhos, performance by the group of cavaquinhos from Napesmate – Núcleo de Amigos dos Pescadores de Matosinhos, and radio camp.
Master José Moreira portrayed Leça da Palmeira from his childhood in his waterfall (about 15m2), in the 20s/30s of the 20th century, when it was an important summer resort, frequented by artists, Porto bourgeoisie and the English community. The approximately 300 pieces and dolls present in this work, several with movement, were built with expertise over decades.
At Cascata Leceira each house, each figure has a story and a meaning for its author. In it we find the main places and monuments of Leça – the River Leça and its six bridges (destroyed during the construction works of the Port of Leixões), the beaches, the Igreja Matriz, the Fort of N. Senhora das Neves, the Lighthouse; the experiences and traditions, in part already lost – the pilgrimages of S. João da Boa Nova, Senhor de Matosinhos (with the crockery fair, the stalls, Teatro dos Robertos, …), the processions; arts and crafts – farming, laundress, sellers, milkmaid, fisherman or cobbler; the illustrious figures of the land – the poet António Nobre, the seafarer José Rabumba, the priest.
Entrance is free. Come have fun and celebrate the popular saints with us!
