Bread prices rose 15% in the last year

Widespread increase in the European Union due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine

The price of bread was 18% higher in August than in the same month in 2021 in the European Union (EU), Eurostat reports, as a result of the Russian offensive in Ukraine that has disrupted global markets.

According to the EU statistical service, the increase in bread prices has accelerated since March, reaching a peak of 18% in August in the EU.

In Portugal, the price of bread increased by 15% between August 2021 and August 2022.

Among member states, the largest increases in the price of bread in August were in Hungary (65.5%), Lithuania (33.3%), Estonia and Slovakia (32.2% each).

On the other hand, France (8.2%), the Netherlands (9.6%) and Luxembourg (10.2%).

Eurostat points out that the prices of bread and edible oils have risen sharply due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, since both countries are major exporters of cereals such as wheat and corn, as well as of fertilizers.
