Complaints of dating violence increase 10% in 5 years with PSP receiving 10,480

On Valentine's Day, which was celebrated this Tuesday, the Public Security Police said that, between 2018 and 2022, it received 10,480 complaints of dating violence, most of the victims being women



According to the PSP, in 2018 1,920 complaints were registered, in the following year 2,185, in 2020 decreased to 2,051, rising again in 2021 to 2,215 and, last year, the reports fell again, registering 2,109.

The police say that dating violence has physical, psychological, social, sexual and economic aspects and this violence can be materialized through insults, threats, offenses, aggression, humiliation, stalking or invasion of privacy. The PSP appeals to the victims, as well as the people closest to them, to be alert to signs of constant pressure, such as isolation from family and friends according to the aggressor's will.

To mark Valentine's Day, the PSP conducted, between this Tuesday and February 18, an awareness and information operation in schools on the prevention of domestic violence, namely dating violence, being an initiative aimed at young people between 13 and 18 years. In the last five school years, under the Safe School Program, the issue of dating violence was present in police activity with PSP conducting more than 4,100 specific awareness-raising actions, involving more than 89,300 students.

In the 2021/2022 school year, 1,297 awareness actions were carried out with the participation of 24,149 students. PSP also calls for the reporting of violence, whether in dating or any other context, the complaint may be filed at police stations or with the Safe School Teams (school context) or the Victim Protection and Support Teams, and support may be requested through escolasegura@psp.pt or violenciadomestica@psp.pt.
