Congratulations Matosinhos Municipal Market

On the 27th of May, the Matosinhos Market celebrates its 70th anniversary

To mark the date, the Municipality of Matosinhos presents a program that will celebrate its 7 decades of life, for 7 months, from May 27 to December 27.

The program to celebrate the 70 years of Mercado de Matosinhos is aimed at current and potential customers, but also at operators, inviting them to take an active part in this “also their” anniversary. The program will be based on 7 pillars - People, Nature, Gastronomy, Art, Crafts, Healthy Life and Community.

During the afternoon of tomorrow, May 27th, a new illustration mural will be created curated by Adélia Carvalho and illustration by Cátia Vidinhas and the following day an original theme will be presented in homage to the people of the Market and the sea. The theme will be presented in the concert “Seven”, created by Saphir Cristal, which will propose a musical tour through the seven decades of the Market’s life, with the interpretation of 7 songs, one for each decade, the last being the original theme of the Market.

Also tomorrow, an artistic residency will begin with the artist “Xico Gaivota” which will result in an installation developed together with operators and customers that will be inaugurated on June 8, World Oceans Day, becoming another point in the Market history. As part of the event-movement “If I were the sea”, whose program intersects with this celebration, two more initiatives will take place, having as their main concern the preservation of the environment and the importance of adopting the best practices proposed by the Circular Economy on a daily basis. day. The first edition of Mercado Circular will take place between the 27th and 28th of May and the Conversa Salgada, on the 8th of June.

The anniversary of the Market will also be associated with Children's Day, with the beginning of the artistic residency of the artisan Simão Bolivar, “Mercado de Brincar”, who during the months of June and July will create a toy inspired by the day of the Market of Matosinhos.

At the end of July, the exhibition “Faces of the Market” will open, which will occupy the public space outside the Matosinhos Market and in which the current operators of the Market will be honored.

At the same time, a booklet will be launched so that the younger generations of customers can collect the faces that are so often unknown and that rise so early so that we can have the best and freshest products at our table. The initiatives scheduled for the end of July aim to highlight, in a special and official way, the date on which the Matosinhos Market opened its doors to the public, that is, August 1, 1952, along with the opening date of the Market that marks the beginning of this celebration program.
