Congratulations to the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra

Musical formation completed, on January 30th, 26 years of its foundation

26 years ago, one of the most dynamic Portuguese jazz ensembles was born from Matosinhos to the world and one of the city council's projects that contributed the most to the internationalization of Matosinhos.

Made up of some of the best jazz musicians in the northern region of the country, Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos (OJM) today develops a line of orientation that privileges, on one hand, the creation of its own repertoire and, on the other hand, the organization of specific projects for which it has invited soloists and conductors of international importance.

Directed by Pedro Guedes and Carlos Azevedo, it has collaborated with names as diverse as Maria Schneider, Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, John Hollenbeck, Jim McNeely, Kurt Rosenwinkel, João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Carlos Bica, Ingrid Jensen, Bob Berg, Conrad Herwig, Mark Turner Rich Perry, Steve Swallow, Gary Valente, Dieter Glawischnig, Stephan Ashbury, Chris Cheek, Ohad Talmor, Joshua Redman, Andy Sheppard, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Maria Rita, Maria João, Mayra Andrade, Manuela Azevedo, Manuel Cruz, Sérgio Godinho, among many others.

In addition to the various performances throughout the country, the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra bets on internationalization, through participation in various jazz festivals.

In 2014, the Matosinhos City Council awarded OJM with the gold medal of merit.

In 2018, OJM moved to the completely remodeled facilities of the Real Vinícola, where the Casa da Arquitectura is also located. The space includes a recording studio, rehearsal rooms, support spaces, offices and educational service activities, complementing the work already developed in the municipality's schools.
