"Danielle" is coming, and attention is needed to what this storm may bring

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection warns of "adverse weather conditions" that storm "Danielle" may bring . It is expected risk of flooding and coastal overflows

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong wind is what the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) expects to hit the mainland, from the coast to the interior, from this Monday.

Storm "Danielle" is coming and, given the possibility of "heavy rain in short periods and gusts of convective origin, especially in the North, Center and between the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal," the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) advanced this Sunday with a "warning to the population.

The intense rainfall could lead, according to ANEPC, to floods in areas historically identified as "vulnerable to flooding and particularly in watersheds not regulated and fast flowing".

Heavy rain and wind can also cause falling branches or trees, possible accidents on the coastline; and drainage difficulties in urban systems, especially when combined with high tide.

Another of the risks highlighted is the possibility of "contamination of drinking water sources by aggregates resulting from rural fires. In other words, the risk of torrents that drag mud and ash into rivers and reservoirs where water is collected for human consumption, such as the Zêzere and Mondego basins affected by the big fire in August in Serra da Estrela.

Despite the increase in air humidity, IPMA considers that it will not be enough to stop fires, given the dryness of the vegetation, especially in the interior of the North and Center, "where the risk of rural fires remains.

The Municipal Civil Protection Service of Matosinhos recommends that the population take the necessary preventive and self-protective measures, namely:

a) Ensure the unblocking of rainwater drainage systems and removal of aggregates and other objects that may be dragged or create obstacles to the free flow of water;

b) Adopt a more defensive driving style, reducing speed;

c) Do not cross flooded areas, in order to prevent people or vehicles from being dragged into holes in the sidewalk or open sewage boxes;

d) Be especially careful when driving and staying near wooded areas, being alert for the possibility of falling branches or trees in places of stronger wind;

e) Be especially careful when fixing temporary structures;

f) Be especially careful when moving near the coastline in vulnerable areas;

g) Pay attention to the meteorological information and the indications of Civil Protection and Security Forces.
