In addition to the intense heat wave that Portugal is currently experiencing, with thermometers exceeding 40 degrees in most districts, the country is on high alert due to the occurrence of fires.
Taking into account the various active fires, which, in certain areas, even threaten homes and the population, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) issued a statement with a set of recommendations aimed at alerting citizens to the importance of protect from exposure to fire smoke.
Indicating that the “smoke from fires has high levels of particles and toxins that can have harmful respiratory, cardiovascular and ophthalmological effects”, the DGS asks the population to “stay inside homes and keep doors and windows well closed, in a cool environment”.
Additionally, whenever possible, citizens should “turn on the air conditioning” and “use masks/respirators (N95), whenever exposure is unavoidable”.
“Outdoor activities” should also be avoided, especially in the hottest hours.
