European Basketball Championship

Portuguese U16 placed fourth

On August 27th, Matosinhos, the "Home of the National Teams", received the last games of the U16 European Basketball Championship.

The first game of the day, perhaps the most anticipated, to dispute the bronze medal, pitted the "Quinas" team against the Croatian counterpart. Despite the great expectation created around the Lusitanian team, which has been growing throughout the championship, and the wave of support coming from the stands, Portugal would end up saying goodbye to the competition with an honorable and very brave 4th place, giving it the title of "fourth best European team", leaving the last place on the podium to the Balkan team, winning the contest by an express 58x72. At halftime, the winner was also the Lar de Santa Cruz, to whom hundreds of school material collected by the Portuguese Basketball Federation were given during the several days of the competition.

In the grand final, which pitted the "giants" France and Spain, historically the "heavyweights" of the sport, the French team won by the short margin of 65x61, becoming the current European champions of the category.

Attending the games and the awards ceremony were the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, as well as the Vice President of the municipality, Carlos Mouta, and the Councilman for Sports, Vasco Pinho. Also present were the President and Vice-President of the Portuguese Basketball Federation, Manuel Fernandes and Manuel Albano, among other distinguished individuals.

The organization was under the responsibility of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the Portuguese Basketball Federation and was supported by the Matosinhos City Hall and Matosinhos Sport.
