Exhibition pays tribute to fishermen during the fascism
Between April 10 and June 20, 1959, the fishermen of Matosinhos carried out a strike for their rights during the period of fascism in Portugal, from which they emerged victorious.
This historical moment is documented in the exhibition "The struggle of the fishermen of Matosinhos during the fascism", which is on show in the Library Gallery of the Florbela Espanca Municipal Library until May 14.
Organized by the Regional Organization of Porto of the Portuguese Communist Party and by the Matosinhos City Hall, the exhibition shows and honours generations of fishermen who, in Matosinhos, fought for their rights and for better living conditions, while facing the repression of the fascist dictatorship that haunted the country for almost half a century.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, the vice-president of the municipality, Carlos Mouta, the councillor for Culture of the municipality, Fernando Rocha, and the councillor for the PCP/PEV, José Pedro Rodrigues. Besides the 71 days strike, the exhibition also shows other days of struggle carried out by the fishing class until the revolution of April 25th 1974.
The exhibition can be seen until May 14th, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 7pm, and Saturdays, from 9.30am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. On Sundays, the Library Gallery of the Florbela Espanca Municipal Library is closed. Admission is free.
