Eight works by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira in Portugal are part of a World Heritage candidacy, submitted last Thursday, April 6
The projects are the building of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), the Piscina das Marés, the Boa Nova Tea House, the Serralves Museum, the Pavilion of Portugal, in Lisbon, the Bouça neighbourhood, the Church of Marco de Canavezes and the Alves Costa House, in Caminha.
Responsible for the candidacy submission, the FAUP director, João Pedro Xavier, explained to the Lusa agency that the selection of the eight works is justified by the "fact that most of them are already heritage" and by the "typological or functional variety of the proposed buildings".
The cases of Bairro da Bouça, in Porto, and Casa Alves Costa, in Caminha, were submitted for national classification, so the director of FAUP said that it will be necessary to have some "green light" for these two buildings.
The application entitled "Álvaro Siza's Architectural Works in Portugal" has been on Portugal's World Heritage Indicative List since 2016, with a list of 18 projects, having since been reduced to eight.
João Pedro Xavier said that "the application is prepared with the so-called future extensions", so that, later on, other projects of the Pritzker Prize architect can be associated, including abroad.
The partners in this candidature are Porto City Hall, Matosinhos City Hall, Lisbon City Hall, Marco de Canavezes City Hall, Caminha City Hall, Serralves Foundation, Porto University and Lisbon University.
