Galp invests in university education for young people in Matosinhos

Merit students were distinguished at a ceremony held by EPIS - Entrepreneurs for Social Inclusion, at Galp's headquarters in Lisbon. Support includes six undergraduate scholarships and four master's scholarships

Galp, through its Foundation, distinguished ten young university students from Matosinhos with scholarships for the completion of Bachelor's and Master's degrees, recognising talent and individual academic merit while contributing to the creation of success factors in Higher Education.

The undergraduate and master's scholarships have an annual value of 850€ and 1000€, respectively, and are valid for a period of three years for undergraduate and two years for master's degrees. This is an important support in a context of increasing difficulties of Portuguese families with the costs associated with education.

"At Galp, a multinational company with presence in three continents, we never forget where we come from and who we are; we never lose sight of the responsibility in building a more solidary and sustainable society in the communities where we are," pointed out Teresa Abecasis, the COO of Galp Comercial.

Galp hosted the 2022 edition of the ceremony to deliver the EPIS Social Grants - Entrepreneurs for Social Inclusion, which brought together 35 companies and individual donors to award a record 163 social grants to young people, schools and organizations for a total of 340 thousand euros in support for qualification and inclusion.

Responsible for about 30% of the total investment of EPIS in 2022 and for 40 of the 163 scholarships awarded by partner companies nationwide, Galp and its Foundation unequivocally strengthen its commitment to combat failure and school dropout in Portugal.

"We believe that there is no better investment than a good training. We do it indoors, with our employees, but also outdoors, betting on young people and their talents and skills, because only they will enable us to overcome challenges such as energy transition and the demand for decarbonization," concludes Teresa Abecasis.

The municipalities chosen by Fundação Galp to award its 40 scholarships, 24 undergraduate and 16 masters, were selected on the basis of the location of several key projects in Galp's energy ecosystem: municipalities with a strong and historical Galp presence, such as Matosinhos and Sines, and where transformation and reconversion processes are underway that will make these territories world reference hubs in the areas of innovation and green energy; in the area of renewables, such as Alcoutim, Odemira and Ourique, which are receiving solar energy projects; related to investments in new value chains in the energy sector, as is the case of the installation of the lithium to battery conversion unit, in Setúbal, of the Aurora joint venture; and, finally, the autonomous regions of Madeira and Azores in a contribution to the social and territorial cohesion of the country.

Students of all nationalities who have finished the 12th grade of school or degree successfully in 2021/2022 and who live in the municipalities of Alcoutim, Matosinhos, Odemira, Ourique, Santiago do Cacém, Setúbal and Sines, as well as in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira, could apply.
