General Assembly of the Atelier project

Matosinhos is one of eight European cities to test smart urban solutions

The municipality of Matosinhos will host, in the next three days, the General Assembly of the “ATELIER” project.

Funded by the European Commission through Horizon 2020 - Community Framework Program for Research & Innovation, the “ATELIER” project is the result of a partnership established between the cities of Amsterdam and Bilbao (leaders), with Matosinhos, Budapest, Riga, Copenhagen, Bratislava and Krakow partner cities.

The objective of this project is to link smart cities with energy efficiency, mobility and integration of renewable energies.

Conducted by Frans Verspeek, coordinator of the “ATELIER” project for the city of Amsterdam, the session was attended by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, and the Councilor for the Environment, Manuela Álvares.

The municipality of Matosinhos is developing a study with a view to drawing up an energy plan for the municipality of Matosinhos, which will incorporate various applications of smart urban solutions.

The project has a duration of 60 months, with the aim, with its implementation, to define an action plan to contribute to the decarbonization of the municipality by 2050.

The first phase includes the elaboration of studies. AdEPorto – Agência de Energia do Porto supports the municipality of Matosinhos in the monitoring of technical studies and in the preparation of replication plans for the initiatives carried out by the leading cities, also providing support in the administrative and financial management of the project and in the preparation of reports. interim.

Two PED (Positive Energy District) pilot zones have already been defined and characterized, one in the Custió Housing Complex, and the other in the stretch of the River Leça, between Ponte da Pedra and Ponte do Carro, which correspond to the first two phases of the project. “Leça Green Corridor”. The Lionesa Business Center (CEL) is located in the first phase of the work and, in the second phase, connections to the metro stations of Esposade, Araújo and Custió.

CEL will therefore be an important partner in the PED pilot, in Matosinhos, with a view to implementing an energy community based on photovoltaic technologies, integrated with electric mobility solutions, promoting the involvement of private companies that will work in partnership with the CEL, the municipality and AdePorto.

The studies also intend to assess the possibility of reconversion and start-up of the mills located in the “Corredor Verde do Leça”, which are municipal property. The objective is to produce energy that can then be distributed through the public lighting network and the docks for charging bicycles, which will be installed near the metro stations of Esposade, Araújo and Custió.

The financing of the project in Matosinhos is around 542 thousand euros, of which 372 thousand are supported by the municipality and 170 thousand by AdEPorto.
