Legend of Santo Antonio do Telheiro

Historical recreation in S. Mamede de Infesta

S. Mamede de Infesta was this weekend the stage for the historical recreation of the legend of Santo António do Telheiro, promoted by the Matosinhos City Hall.

For years, the Monastery of Leça do Balio hosted the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem Hospital, a religious-military order known as "Hospitalários", which gave shelter and assistance to the pilgrims who demanded the tomb of the apostle Santiago in Compostela.

One of the pilgrims was said to be Fernando de Bulhões, better known as Saint Anthony. It is said that during the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, caught in a terrible storm, Saint Anthony found shelter under a shed where the chapel now stands.

It was precisely this episode that was recreated last night in a show that took place next to the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Telheiro, with the participation of historian Joel Cleto. The Councilman of Culture of the Municipality of Matosinhos, Fernando Rocha, was present among the crowd that attended the show.

A company of actors and extras brought to life a number of episodes in the life of Saint Anthony, including the Miracle of Saint Anthony of Telheiro, which occurred there during his passage on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
