The municipalities that are part of Lipor - Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde and Valongo - will form an intermunicipal energy community to start capitalizing on the surplus electricity produced by incinerating household waste
The news is advanced by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lipor, José Manuel Ribeiro, in an interview to the JN.
This intermunicipal energy community will save 3.6 million euros. What happens currently is that the household waste produced at Lipor, which is incinerated, is produced enough energy to illuminate public buildings, streets and schools of the eight municipalities served by the intermunicipal company, which still manages to have surplus.
But this surplus energy is being fed into the public grid without benefit to the municipalities. The municipalities that are part of Lipor want to change this situation and even open the inter-municipal energy community and other chambers in the region, without being obliged to become members of Lipor.
Annually, 170 thousand MWh of electricity are generated. The municipalities only consume about 100 thousand MWh.
