Matosinhos City Hall offers Culture for all tastes

Design, painting, sculpture, photography and documentary memories to see in Matosinhos

If you didn't visit in 2022, take advantage of the year 2023, which has just begun, to visit some of the exhibitions that the Matosinhos City Hall has prepared for you, with free admission or at a symbolic price.

Until February 12th, visit Casa do Design de Matosinhos and take the opportunity to see the retrospective exhibition "João Carlos", dedicated to João Carlos Celestino Gomes, whose activity as an illustrator and designer developed from the twenties until his death in 1961.

The exhibition is curated by designer Jorge Silva and displays a total of 111 pieces that include prints on panels and shop windows, books, magazines, and pamphlets.

Admission is free. Visiting hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 12:30pm and 2pm to 5:30pm; Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 3pm to 6pm.

If you like painting, go to the Quinta de Santiago Museum, in Leça da Palmeira. Until February 26th, you have the opportunity to see the exhibition "António Carneiro. The poet with brushes", part of the evocation of the artist's 150th anniversary.

There are 70 works, objects, and documents, some of them unpublished or almost unknown, by the only Portuguese symbolist painter. The two versions of António Carneiro's most iconic work - "Ecce-Homo", António Carneiro's well-known 1918 self-portrait, and "Menina do gato", are some of the creations that can be appreciated.

The entrance fee is only 1 euro. You can visit from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 AM to 1 PM and 3 PM to 6 PM, and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, from 3 PM to 6 PM.

The Matosinhos Memory Museum has two exhibitions that are worth visiting.

Until March 19th, the exhibition "Romagem de Saudade" (Memories Journey) is open in the Memory Room. It consists of a display of materialities and memories lived and told about the shipwreck of 1947 that killed 152 fishermen.

Another exhibition that you can visit throughout this year is "Matosinhos, Place and Memory", which focuses on photographic memories and dialogue between the duality past / present of some points of the urban and industrial landscape of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, in the last 25 years, through the lens of Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico and designer Nuno Leal.

The entrance fee is 1 euro and includes visits to the permanent and temporary exhibitions. The schedule is from Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, it is from 10am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm.

On the other hand, at the Matosinhos Municipal Gallery, until April 23rd, it is open "Linhas de Vento" - Artistic Travels in Nature - Works from the Serralves collection. It is an exhibition of sculpture, installation and painting, with works, among others, by the artists Alberto Carneiro, Ana Jotta, Maria Nordman and Richard Long.
