Matosinhos prepares for carbon neutrality

Innovation session involved parish councils, municipal companies and local authority heads

The Matosinhos City Hall has set itself the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 85% by 2030, thus anticipating the decarbonization goal set for 2050.

It should be remembered that Matosinhos reached, in 2020, the decarbonization goal set for 2030. Compared to 2009, the year in which the Municipality's Energy Matrix was prepared (therefore considered the starting point for carbon neutrality), carbon emissions were reduced by 40.2%.

With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in 2030, limiting the average temperature rise to 1.5ºC, the municipality is promoting a series of initiatives involving the community to collect new contributions to develop this strategy.

Yesterday, in the Lavra parish council, participated in a working session with representatives of the four parish unions, municipal companies and various municipal services.

The innovation session was attended by the Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, the councillor for Environment and Energy Transition, Manuela Álvares, the councillor for Education, António Correia Pinto, the director of Matosinhos Sport, Henrique Calisto, the director of MatosinhosHabit, Helena Vaz, and the executive director of Porto Energy Agency, Rui Pimenta. Also present were the President of the Parish Union of Perafita, Lavra and Santa Cruz do Bispo, Lurdes Queirós, the president of the Parish Union of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões, Pedro Gonçalves, the president of the Parish Union of S. Mamede de Infesta and Senhora da Hora, Leonardo Fernandes, and the president of the Parish Union of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, Paulo Carvalho.

The participants were divided into four tables, each dedicated to a theme: energy, sustainable mobility, municipal action and stakeholder involvement, and financing.

Reflecting on this theme, each group presented suggestions for measures and solutions to be implemented with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. At the end, Luísa Salgueiro handed out the diplomas of ambassadors of the strategy "Matosinhos Carbon Neutrality 2030" to municipal companies and parish unions.
