Matosinhos will host Comic Con Portugal in March 2024

The biggest national pop culture event, Comic Con, returns to Portugal in 2024, between 21 and 24 March, celebrating its 10th anniversary at Exponor

The 10th edition of Comic Con Portugal will take place between 21 and 24 March 2024, at Exponor, in Matosinhos. The event's organisation explains that returning to the city and Exponor made sense to celebrate the event's 10th anniversary, making it happen in the same place where it began in 2014.

José Luís Machado, the event's marketing director, announced that the event will occupy the entire Exponor space. "In a covered area of 60,000 square metres and a total area of 200,000 square metres," he said at the press conference held at Cinema Batalha in Porto.

"We will build a new pavilion, more parking," assured, for his part, Paulo Rocha Cardoso, executive director of Comic Con Portugal.

"The whole area will cover a mobility circuit that will be worked with the three municipalities of the Atlantic Front (Matosinhos, Porto and Gaia)," added Paulo Rocha Cardoso. It was "extremely difficult to do this year the Comic Con Portugal", he added.

According to Paulo Rocha Cardoso, the involvement of the cities of Porto, Matosinhos and Gaia "fills many of the needs that an event of this dimension has to guarantee that it is up to the demands of the film, television, video games, literature and comic book industry". As well as "creating the necessary conditions to accommodate the thousands of fans that visit".

The executive director also praised the fact that the partnership is not limited "only to the event", but also to the realisation, at the Atlantic Front, of "several activities throughout the year 2023 until the next edition in 2024". When asked by journalists about the investment of this event, he replied that it is "incalculable".

"We have a huge investment every year. There are hundreds of people who work tirelessly. The amount is not the important thing, the important thing is the partners and creating an event on an international level. We try above all to create the best event possible," said the executive director of Comic Con Portugal.

"The choice of dates is not arbitrary," clarified Paulo Rocha Cardoso, who said it is necessary to analyse the calendar "because from May to September the industry is all stopped. The date has to make sense with other world Comic Con, such as the one in Brazil, to assess the possibilities of bringing artists and brands.

José Luís Machado recalled the beginning of the event, almost 10 years ago: "For four years we were in Matosinhos with lots of excitement, but the industry's demand for an event on a larger scale forced us to head south, to Oeiras, to attract international brands".

The covid-19 pandemic led the organisation to adapt the event, with a digital auditorium, interviews with national and international talent, and film previews. In 2021, Comic Con Portugal was forced to change the dates of the event, moving it to December, in Lisbon, at the Altice Arena, where it also took place in late 2022.
