Birthday with activities for the whole family
The MuMMa - Matosinhos Memory Museum celebrated, on the weekend of August 26 and 27, its 1st anniversary, with a special program full of activities for the whole family and free admission.
Exhibitions, music, guided tours, staged readings, recreational and educational workshops, and first-person memoirs were some of the activities planned.
Housed in Palacete Visconde de Trevões, a building from the early twentieth century, which is part of the collective memory of generations of "matosinhenses", the Matosinhos Memory Museum has the mission to enhance the historical memory and heritage of the territory, crossing it with the individual memories of its inhabitants.
The exhibition "Matosinhos Place and Memory" was inaugurated, presenting a selection of photographs by the prestigious Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013), belonging to the municipality's collection.
The urban and industrial landscapes captured by Basilico in the project "Umas Cidades Assim" (1996) were portrayed in the present time by Nuno Leal. More than 25 years separate the images and it is possible to see the transformation of Matosinhos.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro, the President of the Municipal Assembly, Palmira Macedo, the Deputy Mayor, Carlos Mouta, and the councilmen Fernando Rocha, Marta Pontes and Vasco Pinho.
The councilman of Culture, Fernando Rocha, recalled that, a year ago, the circumstances of the opening of MuMMa were conditioned by the pandemic, advancing, however, that in less than a year, more than 12 thousand visitors passed through the space and about 200 guided tours were conducted.
"We feel the need to fix the memory of Matosinhos in a space. You only have to visit this building to realize how many generations have passed through here and the stories that were lived here. We want to continue to register the memories. We want to continue to have a living museum, with people and for people", said Fernando Rocha.
In her turn, the Mayor of Matosinhos underlined "the connection of the Matosinhos community to this building". "There was a lot of curiosity about what we were doing here. For us, the most important thing is the return we get. The testimonies registered here show the relationship between the past and the future, based on new technologies. This exhibition symbolizes just that: what Matosinhos was and its transformation into what it is today", said Luísa Salgueiro.
At night, it was the turn of the Matosinhos artist Marta Ren to perform on the 1st floor balcony of the MuMMa. One of the great names in Portuguese music, with an unmistakable strength and style, at the level of the great black soul and funk vocalists, Marta Ren has been acclaimed at festivals and concert halls across Europe.
From the program for the second day, the highlight was a new thematic visit - Fragments of History, focused on millenary or secular archaeological treasures, testimonies of the origins and evolution of the communities that occupied the current territory of Matosinhos, throughout history.
There was also a special session of the project "Save the Language of Camões", with the staged reading "Damas em Xeque", by Brazilian playwright Fábio Brandi Torres.
It was considered an opportunity for visitors to discover the secrets and memories of this palace, as well as his experiences in Portugal and Brazil, where he made a colossal fortune, which he partly put at the disposal of the communities of Matosinhos and S. João da Pesqueira.
