National Beach Volleyball Championship starts this Friday

The best Portuguese duos compete this weekend at Praia Internacional. The public has free entry

The first of the five stages of the Lidl Championship 2022, the main national beach volleyball competition, will take place next to the Transparent Building from the 1st to the 3rd of July. Three days of spectacle are expected at Praia do Porto Stadium, with 56 games between the most outstanding Portuguese athletes in the sport.

In the women's competition, Juliana Rosas (10 titles) and Tânia Oliveira are back to being the favorite duo. In a second line, there are Beatriz Pinheiro and Inês Castro, supported by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation (FPV) in international competitions, and the also experienced Matilde Calado and Mafalda Porto.

Among the men, national champions Roberto Reis and Sebastião Leão defend the title in the face of opposition from duos such as João Nuno Pedrosa and Hugo Campos, supported abroad by FPV, Fabrício Barros and Gabriel Cardoso or Guilherme Maia and Filipe Leite (history of winners of the test).

On Friday, the first game is scheduled for 14:00 and the last for 19:00. On Saturday, the action starts at 8:30 am and goes on until after 8:00 pm. Sunday's matches start at 9:00 am and the finals are scheduled for 4:30 pm (women's) and 5:30 pm (men's), with live broadcast on Volei TV and A Bola TV channels.

After starting on the sands of Porto, the championship passes through Espinho, Freixo de Espada à Cinta and Portimão in July. The fifth and final stage is scheduled for the first weekend of August, at the FPV High Performance Center, in Cortegaça. Results and rankings can be followed on the tournament page.

This weekend's stage adds to the various competitions that the FPV has organized in the last decade at Estádio de Praia, in collaboration with the Porto Chamber. Examples are the Under-19 World Cup (2010, 2013 and 2014), the Under-18 European Championship (2010), the Under-23 European Championship (2011) or the University World Championship (2014).

Before volleyball, Praia Stadium hosted korfball and rugby competitions. In July and August, sports such as football, handball or footvolley will also pass through the venue.
