OPorto without cars

Municipality will ban cars from the historic center

The Porto City Hall wants to see the historic center with a new dynamic, i.e. without cars. The city councilman, Pedro Baganha, announced this Thursday, September 9, that he intends to put into practice the pedestrianization project of this area of the city by the end of the year.

"The plan is elaborated. We are seeing the best time to present it, but certainly it will be by the end of this year. Probably, first, in a city council meeting and then publicly disclosed," said the councilman. The specific pedestrianization plan for the historic center covers the area that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

"Although it is a project that envisages future actions, the truth is that we are already acting, namely with the Restricted Automobile Access Zones [CAAZ], which are already implemented, to a large extent, in that area," he said. Since the ZAACs already exist, now all that remains is to deal with the "rehabilitation of the historic center and the rationality of a strictly pedestrian network".

The ban on automobile circulation in certain areas is one of the measures to safeguard and enhance the heritage, attract residents, promote sustainability and improve accessibility in the northern city.
