Portugal's population is the oldest in the European Union

The average age of the population in Portugal was, last year, 46.8 years old



The average age of the population in Portugal is the second highest among the 27 member states of the European Union (EU), having increased the most in the last 10 years, according to Eurostat data just released.

The official EU statistics office says that the average age of EU residents reached 44.4 years on January 1, 2022 (compared to 44.1 in 2021), having increased by 2.5 years compared to 2012, when it was 41.9 years. In Portugal, the average rose almost five years.
