Project that transformed neighborhood in Matosinhos named 'Work of the Year'

The project that gave a new life to the Monte Xisto neighborhood, in Matosinhos, is among the seven nominees for the 'Work of the Year' award, by Archdaily Brazil

The work, promoted by the INSTITUTE and designed by architect Paulo Moreira, is inserted in the Healthy Neighborhoods program. The support created by the government aims to improve impoverished neighborhoods through small investments.

The project, which had the collaboration of the Angolan artist collective 'Verkron', consisted in the transformation of stairs and a ruin with more than 40 years. The trail that connects the neighborhood to the Leça River was cleaned up, through an action of cleaning and requalification of the ruined building. The space is now a place for socializing and gathering for the neighborhood's population.

The project consisted in the repair of steps and handrails, as well as the creation of a new boundary between the public stairs and the neighboring private land. A structure of benches was also created, inviting people to use the staircase itself as a place to rest.

The project is in competition on the Archdaily Brasil platform, through an online voting that runs until March 22.
