The PSP will conduct between this Friday and January 02, 2023, the operation "Police Always Present: Safe Holidays 2022-2023", to strengthen surveillance during Christmas and New Year's Eve
NIn the operation, which will take place in mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and Azores, "PSP will increase its presence on public roads, enhancing visibility and ability to prevent the occurrence of criminal offenses, contributing to an increased sense of security of citizens," says PSP in a statement.
"Since this is the first Christmas season without restrictive measures, after two years of pandemic, it becomes (even) more necessary to continually value the aspect of road safety and strengthen the appeal to citizens to comply with the rules of the Highway Code, adapt their driving and the speed at which they drive to the state of the road and the weather conditions that exist at the time," adds the statement.
PSP says it will carry out "preventive visibility operations, along with enforcement during the festive season, with special focus on the main causes of accidents: speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and / or psychotropic substances, use of cell phones while driving and non-use (or misuse) of seat belts and restraint systems.
In the week leading up to Christmas, surveillance will focus not only on major urban centers - anticipating the influx of people and vehicles in the vicinity of shopping areas - but also on the accesses to the main interurban roads, following the traditional travel to family reunions.
The PSP will also maintain visibility in areas of greatest affluence of people, including historic areas, public transport terminals and tourist areas.
During the period when the operation takes place, the PSP will provide surveillance to private homes, similar to what is done in the "Safe Summer" program.
For this, interested parties should go to the police station in their area of residence and formalize the request, says the PSP, recalling that during periods of absence from home (even for short periods of time), families should ensure that doors and windows are well locked, and should avoid publicizing the more prolonged absences, including through social networks.
