Registration open for participants in both events
The Municipality of Matosinhos has been investing, over the years, in the organisation of historical recreations centred either on events or relevant figures in the history of the city.
With these initiatives, the municipality intends to make the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality known, but also to contribute to attracting tourism and boosting the local economy, namely in the restaurant sector.
The historical recreation "The Pirates" returns this year for another edition. From 7 to 9 July, the area around Forte Nossa Senhora das Neves, in Leça da Palmeira, will once again become the setting for a real journey back in time to the 18th century, with plenty of entertainment and activities for the whole family.
Those interested in participating in this historical recreation should consult the rules and conditions of participation, and fill out the form available at https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/e8b7fb08d3bd4d07a57c98ab60bf8577 Entries end on 15 May.
In September, "Os Hospitalários no Caminho de Santiago" will return to Leça do Balio. From September 6th to 10th, the area surrounding the Monastery of Leça do Balio will host the Medieval Fair.
In the 12th century, the Monastery of Leça do Balio became the first headquarters of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem of the Hospital, hence known as "hospitalários" (Hospitallers).
The place played an important role in assisting the pilgrims who demanded the tomb of the apostle Santiago in Compostela, providing spiritual and medical assistance. Afonso Henriques and Sancho I passed through here on their way to Compostela, as did Queen Santa Mafalda or D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Holy Constable.
The most eagerly awaited moment of this historical recreation is the royal wedding between D. Fernando and D. Leonor Teles.
Celebrated in 1372, this royal wedding is one of the most remarkable episodes of the Portuguese monarchy, as it was involved in much controversy. It was the only royal wedding to be celebrated outside the capital. Against everyone's will, D. Fernando marries D. Leonor Teles, making her Queen of Portugal.
The ceremony took place at the Monastery of Leça do Balio, in the midst of protests from the people, who were violently repressed by the king, giving rise to the events that, years later, triggered the political crisis of 1383-1385.
Registration to take part in this medieval journey ends on 31 May. For information and registration, please go to https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/30221d807633493ba69284475fdc9db1
