Senhor do Padrão

Dating back to the 18th century and also known as “Senhor do Espinheiro” or “Senhor da Areia”, it marks the place where, according to legend, the image of Bom Jesus de Bouças, later known as Senhor de Matosinhos, appeared. A monument with a very strong visual impact until the beginning of the 20th century, this dome was isolated in the middle of the sand of “Praia do Espinheiro”, being visible for many kilometers from both the land and the sea side. Despite the fact that “Senhor do Padrão” has lost much of its visual impact as a result of the development of the last 100 years, it continues to be an important reference for the city and the fishing community. Indeed, much of the religious devotion of the fishermen of Matosinhos and their families is materialized next to this monument, an example of which is the 1st of November when the monument is surrounded by thousands of candles that burn in memory of the fishermen who died at sea. Classified as a National Monument (Decree-Law nº 129/77 of 29 September).

Address: Av. Gen. Norton de Matos 13, 4450-145 Matosinhos
