Sneakers at Casa do Design

Unique collection of 500 nationally manufactured models

Until August 27, the Casa do Design will showcase the legacy of the national sports footwear industry.

Curated by Pedro Carvalho de Almeida, the exhibition "Sneakers - Portuguese Brands from the Estado Novo to the Turn of the Millennium" gathers 500 models of sneakers representing 100 brands designed and manufactured in Portugal, including Sanjo, Cortebel, Celtex, Centro, Cross, Desportex, Gitto's, Jorui, Mind, Valcor and Xávi Sport.

Result of a partnership between ESAD - IDEA, Research in Design and Art, and the Research Institute in Design Media and Culture (ID+), the exhibition was inaugurated today. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Matosinhos, Palmira Macedo, the councilman of Culture, Fernando Rocha, and the scientific director of ESAD - IDEA, José Bártolo.

The exhibition is divided into nuclei. Each nucleus is dedicated to a theme, a set of observations, a brand studied in greater depth, or the technology used in the manufacture of sneakers in Portugal.

In the exhibition there is the Repository, an audiovisual installation that intends to activate the memory with testimonies, photographs, videos, and sound recordings of the factory environment.

Parallel to the exhibition, a cycle of conversations will take place, moderated by the curator Pedro Carvalho de Almeida, where themes associated with people, objects, culture and the sports footwear industry in Portugal will be debated.

The first will be on February 25th and will be dedicated to the contents and catalog of the exhibition. Between March and June, the role of the designer as collector, the links between design, industry and craftsmanship, and the challenges and opportunities in sustainable development will be discussed.

The exhibition is open until August 27th at Casa do Design, from Monday to Friday, from 9am to 12:30pm, and from 2pm to 5:30pm. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, from 3 pm to 6 pm. Admission is free.
