The complete list of the basket of essential goods that will have zero VAT will have between 35 and 40 foods
This Sunday, Luís Marques Mendes revealed in his opinion space in SIC's Jornal da Noite some of these products.
Some of the foods that will be part of the basket of essential goods with zero VAT are already known. The revelation was made this Sunday on SIC's Jornal da Noite by commentator Luís Marques Mendes and the list includes products such as milk, eggs, rice, meat and fruit.
The basket of food whose price will be exempt from VAT will consist of 35 to 40 products. All the foods are part of the so-called healthy eating wheel: cereals and derivatives, vegetables, fruit, fats, dairy products, meat, fish, eggs and legumes.
The list of foods is already known:
Potatoes
Pasta
Rice
Carrot
Onion
Tomato
Fruit (apple, banana, orange)
Semi-skimmed milk
Chicken
Pork
Bread
Beans
Vegetables (broccoli and zucchinis)
Fish (salmon and hake)
Eggs
Olive oil
VAT on these products will remain at 0% for six months. The Government is negotiating a tripartite agreement with food production and distribution to ensure that the VAT exemption will be fully reflected in the price.
What is left off this list?
In the document that SIC had access to sent by the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Finance, the criteria for the choice are defined and are excluded, for example, the canned food made from salted and smoked fish and shellfish. Sausages and some canned foods should also be left off the list of products exempt from VAT.
The complete list should be known this week.
Remember that the VAT rate currently applied to staple foods is already reduced: 6% on the mainland, 5% in Madeira and 4% in the Azores - with the new measure, these values will become 0%. In practice, this means that purchases will be 6% cheaper.
On Thursday, even before the official announcement, Pingo Doce had already pronounced itself on the possible measure, guaranteeing that it will comply and that it will fully reflect the decrease in VAT on food products.
So far, Jerónimo Martins was the only distributor to react to the measure.
