This Christmas the Portuguese will give more presents

Contrary to what might be expected, given the rise in prices, this Christmas there is an increase in the intention to offer gifts

This happens because the last two years were marked by the pandemic and now the Portuguese have the possibility to celebrate the season with more people.

These data are the study Observador Cetelem that reveals that 98% of Portuguese respondents will offer gifts, 10% more than last year. Each interviewee intends to offer, on average, nine gifts, three more than in 2021.

Around 30% intend to give between seven and ten gifts, 28% plan to give between four and six gifts and 15% of respondents between one and three. In contrast, 24% of people who responded to the questionnaire do not intend to give any presents this Christmas.

Respondents aged between 25 and 34 years old are the ones who intend to offer the most presents (10), as well as individuals from higher classes, living in the metropolitan area of Oporto or in the Southern region of the country.

However, the increase in the number of gifts does not mean that the Portuguese intend to spend more. The budget foreseen for presents alone this Christmas season will be, on average, around 126€, 21€ less than last year. In turn, 96% reveal that they intend to save, trying, for example, to offer gifts only to those closest to them (67%).

As for the list of gifts that the Portuguese plan to give are in the top 5: chocolates, biscuits and biscuits (81%, +19% compared to 2021); clothing and fashion accessories (79%, +16%); wine or other drinks (75%, +9%); perfumes, make-up and wellness kits (70%, +17%.); cultural products (65%, +24%.); and toys (54%, +3%.).
