The climate change service of the European Union's (EU) Earth Observation Programme Copernicus revealed on Thursday that the summer of 2022 was the warmest ever recorded in Europe, with temperatures in June, July and August beating last year's record.
According to the information advanced, temperatures were "about 1.34°C above the 1991-2020 average for the [summer] season."
In the month of August, specifically, temperatures were "by far the highest" ever recorded "with 1.72°C above the 1991-2020 average."
"An intense series of heat waves across Europe, together with unusual drought conditions, led to a summer of extremes, with record temperatures, droughts and wildfires," said Freja Vamborg, scientific officer at the European institute.
