Wheelchair Handball: Municipality honours European and World Champions

The athletes from Matosinhos, Ricardo Queirós and Diana Machado, who became European and World wheelchair handball champions for the National Team were received and honoured

The tribute took place last week at the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho (Town Hall), by the Mayor, the Councillor for Sports, Vasco Pinho, and Henrique Calisto, Director of Matosinhos Sport, the Municipal Sports Company, who also made a point of mentioning that achievement on the social networks.

"It is a source of pride for Matosinhos to have athletes who leave their mark and raise the name of Portugal around the world", said Luísa Salgueiro at the time. "Congratulations for all the effort and for overcoming all the difficulties. You are a reference and inspiration for many", she added.

Remember that the National Team was present in all the European finals of the sport, winning a gold medal (2018, Pousos) and three silver medals (2015, 2016, 2019) and that now, after much effort and dedication, is part of the history of wheelchair handball as the first European and World Champion.

In what was the first edition of the competition, held in Leiria as a result of a joint effort between the International Handball Federation (IHF) and the European Handball Federation (EHF), Ricardo Queirós also stood out as the top scorer, with 37 goals, assuming in the end "the dream of seeing the sport integrated in the Paralympic Games".
