World Youth Day Symbols

The pilgrimage of World Youth Day (WYD) symbols passes through the territory of Matosinhos

At 3.8 metres high, the Pilgrim Cross, built for the Holy Year in 1983, was entrusted by John Paul II to young people on Palm Sunday of the following year, so that it could be taken around the world. Since 1983, this symbol has passed through more than 90 countries on five continents.

The other symbol, the Icon of Our Lady "Salus Populi Romani", was introduced by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and has accompanied the Pilgrim Cross ever since.

WYD is a meeting of young people from all over the world with the Pope. Next year, between August 1 and 6, more than a million young people are expected in Lisbon to meet Pope Francis.

The pilgrimage of the WYD symbols began in November 2021. Until July 2023, it will pass through the 21 dioceses of Portugal.

In Matosinhos, the pilgrimage route included a stop next to the Paços do Concelho building, and then continued to the Matosinhos Church. The moment was attended by the Mayor, Luísa Salgueiro, the President of the Assembly, Palmira Macedo, the Vice-President, Carlos Mouta, and the President of the Union of Parishes of Custóias, Leça do Balio and Guifões.
