Almost 4,000 visits to the elderly in six months

Project "Elderly in Safety" of the Municipal Police reaches 100 people.

Since 2013, the Matosinhos Municipal Police has been developing the "Elderly in Safety" project, promoting visits to the elderly in the municipality who live in isolation, are physically dependent or have economic difficulties.

The visits also deter individuals from any abusive behavior or approach to the elderly, given the assiduous presence of the police in their homes.

This work also reinforces the sense of security of the elderly, who are in a very vulnerable situation and who find in the Municipal Police officer a friend.

Currently, about 100 elderly people are covered by the daily monitoring that the Municipal Police officers do, under this program.

Since the beginning of the year, 3809 visits have been made (twice a week to each elderly person).

In addition to home visits, telephone contacts are made whenever necessary.

This year, 754 phone calls have already been made to seniors who were ill or feeling lonely.

36 elderly people covered by this Municipal Police project also benefit from the Home Teleassistance Service, in the scope of the Matosinhos Senior program.

The elderly have at their disposal, in their own homes, a user-friendly technological device, which gives automatic access to an operator available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, with several functions.

While maintaining the user's privacy and autonomy, this service allows for an immediate response in emergency situations concerning health, safety or loneliness.
