At least 90% of the world's population has acquired immunity against covid-19

The estimate was advanced by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus continues to dominate

The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that at least 90% of the global population has acquired immunity against covid-19, either through infection or vaccination. The estimate was advanced by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a video press conference.

Ghebreyesus warned, however, that "gaps in surveillance, testing, genetic sequencing" of the coronavirus that causes covid-19 and "in vaccination continue to create ideal conditions for the emergence of a worrying new variant that could cause significant mortality."

Dominant in the world, the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has more than 500 subvariants, all very contagious and with genetic mutations that make them able to overcome immune barriers more easily, but without causing serious illness, according to the WHO.
