Exponor: Some of Portugal's most export-oriented sectors meet for three days

From 10 to 12 November, Exponor is the privileged stage of four specialized events, which take place simultaneously. Many novelties, trends and technological innovations in the footwear, leather, wood and textile industries will be highlighted at Maquishoes, Expocouro, FIMAP and Maquitex

For three days, Exponor receives four of the most exporting sectors of Portugal, simultaneously, in Maquishoes - Footwear Industry Machinery, Technology and Accessories Fair, Expocouro - International Leather Fair, FIMAP - International Fair of Machinery, Accessories and Services for the Wood Industry, Forestry and Exploration and MAQUITEX - Machinery, Technology and Accessories Exhibition for the Textile, Clothing and Embroidery Industry, to present the new trends and technological innovations, through dynamics and exhibitions to demonstrate what is best made in our country.

The footwear industry is affirmed as one of the main strategic and basic sectors of the national economy. In the last year, the turnover of the sector exceeded 2 billion euros, employing about 40 thousand workers. Exports, in 2021, increased 16.4% over the previous year, resulting in 69 million pairs of shoes exported worldwide.

Also the leather is one of the most used raw materials in footwear, in Portugal. This is the most valued segment and in which the national industry invests more, occupying the 9th position among the major world exporters. Despite these results, according to Alcino Martinho, responsible for CTIC - Technological Centre for Leather Industries, there is a lack of professionals in the sector, especially with regard to production. "Even though this industry lacks manpower, it is important to strengthen training and information sharing with professionals, not only technicians, but also to extend this training to different business positions in order to facilitate the, increasingly strong, internationalization of the sector," argues Alcino Martinho

Under the motto "Make it Visible", Maquishoes and Expocouro intends to reflect the present and anticipate the future of the sector, presenting new materials and technologies. These fairs, in addition to exhibiting new technological solutions for the industry, will promote a programme of conferences focused on a more sustainable industry.

"Live the power of the industry" is the theme of the 21st edition of FIMAP - International Fair of Machines, Accessories and Services for the Wood, Forestry and Logging Industry, the largest national event in the wood, forestry and logging industry, which brings together this sector and high technology.

At the moment this sector has two major challenges, recognizes Maria do Carmo Moreira, responsible for AIMMP - Association of the Wood and Furniture Industries of Portugal. The scarcity of raw material is a worldwide issue, but in Portugal, this situation is more serious due to the absence of a national forestry policy, which conditions the sector's entire value chain. "The scarcity of labour is also a huge challenge that industry faces in Portugal and where the Wood and Furniture Industries are no exception.

Vocational Training is a response to the needs of the sector, so in partnership with the CFPIMM - Vocational Training Centre for the Wood and Furniture Industries, the AIMMP works to meet the needs of companies. According to Maria do Carmo Moreira, "we feel a lack of training in management, as many of the companies in the sector are small and many of them linked to family structures.

According to AIMMAP - Associação dos Industriais Metalúrgicos, Metalomecânicos e Afins de Portugal, Exponor's partner in the event, says that, over the past three years, the metalworking sector has overcome several obstacles, diversifying markets and continuing to grow. In 2021, the sector, which represents about a third of the national manufacturing industry, in terms of the number of companies, turnover and number of workers, reached an annual record of 19.9 billion euros in exports. According to Pedro Azevedo, responsible for AIMMAP, "FIMAP is undoubtedly a great opportunity to help place the national industry in the league of the most advanced and developed industries worldwide.

In this edition, visitors will have the opportunity to participate in an experience, based on a sensorial installation in which wood is the main element. The "Conference Space" is a space where the brilliant minds of the wood sector will participate in talks on various topics related to the sector.

MAQUITEX - International Exhibition of Machines, Technology and Accessories for the Textile, Garment, Clothing and Embroidery Industries is the fourth of the exhibitions that will take place simultaneously at Exponor. Inserted in the textile sector, following and promoting the exponential growth of the sector - whose turnover, in 2021, exceeded 7 billion euros - the fair returns for its 18th edition, five years later, with several novelties and conditions for professionals to measure the pulse of the sector.

In this edition, several innovations in the world of technology, machinery, equipment, accessories and services, available to all professionals in the textile market, will be on display, highlighted by reference companies such as Alphashirt, Cheek to Cheek, Lectra and Wondermac.

This event is an already recognized meeting point for the presentation of new technologies, equipment and innovative materials in an industry that, although traditional, has verified in Portugal a level of technological development of the best in the world.
