Fuel prices were cheaper in Portugal than in Spain

Pre-tax fuel prices were cheaper in Portugal than in Spain at the end of 2022. With tax, only national diesel and LPG prices were below

Average pre-tax fuel prices were cheaper in Portugal than in Spain in the last three months of 2022. With taxes, only diesel and LPG prices were below Spanish prices.

According to data from the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), released on Wednesday, both simple gasoline 95, as simple diesel and LPG auto were below the prices charged in the neighboring country between October and December last year, this before including the tax burden.

Regarding the average selling price (SMP) before taxes for plain 95 gasoline, it was 3.7 cents per liter (cent/l) cheaper than the price in Spain. But with the addition of the 48% tax burden, "the highest in the Iberian Peninsula", indicates ERSE, this increases the price of plain gasoline by 1.9 cent/l in comparison to the neighboring country.

Thus, plain 95 gasoline with taxes was on sale for 1.727 euros per liter in Portugal, while in Spain it was 1.708 euros per liter. Without taxes, the price at a national level went down to 0.902 euros per liter and in the neighboring country was 0.939 euros per liter.

Compared to the rest of the European Union, the national average prices are higher, which makes Portugal occupy the 11th position of the countries with higher prices.

For straight diesel, the average national price is, excluding taxes, 3.8 cent/liter cheaper than in Spain. This situation is maintained with the addition of taxes, which in Portugal weigh 37% and in the neighboring country 38%, "which contributes to the practice of lower PMV in our country," explains ERSE.

Thus, the simple diesel with taxes was on sale for 1.761 euros per liter in Portugal, while in Spain it was 1.842 euros per liter. Without taxes, the price at a national level went down to 1.105 euros per liter and in the neighboring country it was 1.143 euros per liter.

In relation to the rest of the European bloc, with taxes, Portugal has the eighth cheapest price of simple diesel, and without taxes falls to 11th position.

For LPG Auto, "national prices, with and without taxes, were lower than those in Spain," points out ERSE. In relation to the remaining 27 Member States, the national PMV of this fuel was 5.2 cent/l higher, but excluding taxes, these were 4.2 cent/l below the European average.

Thus, LPG with taxes was on sale for 0.878 euros per liter in Portugal, while in Spain it was 1.039 euros per liter. Without tax, the price at the national level fell to 0.548 euros per liter and in the neighboring country was 0.825 euros per liter.
