The United Nations Organization (UNO) established March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination to commemorate the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa
On March 21, 1960, in Sharpeville, South African police opened fire and killed 69 people in a peaceful demonstration against legislation of the apartheid regime of racial segregation.
The President of the Republic made this Tuesday, March 21, an appeal for inclusion and dialogue, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, asking the Portuguese to combat prejudice and focus on what brings people together.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa makes this appeal in a message posted on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
On this past International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the President of the Republic urges "unity around a more inclusive and less unfair Portugal."
"Let us focus on what brings us together. May the country we leave to the next generations be fairer in diversity than the one we were born in," adds Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
