In 2025, Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport reached a record-breaking traffic milestone, surpassing 16.9 million passengers (a 6.3% increase compared to 2024). The growth of transatlantic connectivity was a strategic pillar in 2025, driven by connections to the USA, Brazil, and the Addis Ababa hub—operations that will continue and, in some cases, be reinforced in 2026.

Porto Airport continues to grow as a gateway for intercontinental destinations. For the Summer 2026 season, several new strategic routes will enhance the North region's connectivity:

New Strategic Routes & Reinforcements

  • USA: Delta Air Lines will inaugurate the New York (JFK) – Porto route in May.

  • Cape Verde: easyJet will launch flights to São Vicente (VXE), Boa Vista (BVC), and Praia (RAI).

  • TAP Air Portugal: Will begin regular operations to Praia (RAI) in June.

  • Morocco: Ryanair will strengthen connections with a new flight to Rabat (RBA).

Eastern Connectivity

Summer 2026 will also see a boost in connections to the East, with an increase of over 20% in movements compared to the previous summer:

  • Turkish Airlines: Increasing to 17 weekly flights to Istanbul.

  • El-Al: Strengthening the connection to Tel Aviv.

New Direct European Flights & Hubs

The expansion of global connectivity includes new direct flights to several European cities, notably:

  • Sofia: Bulgaria Air

  • Zurich: Chair

  • Milan (Linate): easyJet

  • Newcastle: Jet2

  • Warsaw: LOT Polish Airlines

  • Billund: Norwegian

  • Gothenburg: Ryanair

  • Prague: SmartWings

  • Izmir: SunExpress

  • Terceira (Azores): TAP

  • Asturias, Brive-la-Gaillarde, and Strasbourg: Volotea

"This reinforcement of routes and direct connections brings the Northern region closer to the world and confirms its strategic positioning in the Iberian Peninsula," said Thierry Ligonnière, CEO of ANA | VINCI Airports. "Porto Airport is a fundamental asset for tourism, the business sector, and the international attractiveness of Northern Portugal. This growth is only possible thanks to the consistent work of the ANA | VINCI Airports teams who, in close collaboration with airlines and regional partners, have contributed decisively to the development of connectivity and to establishing Porto as one of the most dynamic airports in Europe."

Infrastructure Improvements

A major project was recently completed at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport: the modernization of the runway, representing a 50 million euro investment. Work is also underway across various terminal areas, including:

  • Refurbishment of the Check-in and Security areas.

  • Modernization of the Fast Track channel.

  • A new dedicated channel for passengers with reduced mobility and families.

  • Expansion and modernization of the Lounge.
