"Laboratory in the Atlantic": Robotic platform for data collection

New platform contributes to the sustainable development of the Blue Economy

The Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers, Technology and Science (INESC TEC) now has TEC4SEA, a platform to support research, development, testing and validation of marine technologies.

Pioneer at European level, TEC4SEA acts mainly in the areas of marine robotics, namely autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles, advanced communication and sensing systems, and underwater acoustics, thus contributing to the sustainable development of the Blue Economy.

TEC4SEA finished its initial implementation phase in December last year, and is now starting its operational phase.

The inauguration ceremony took place yesterday at the facilities of the Port of Leixões and was attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato, the Secretary of State for the Sea, José Maria Costa, the President of the Board of Directors of INESC TEC, José Manuel Mendonça, and the Executive Director of INESC TEC, Luís Seca.

This was followed by a visit to two of the main resources and capacities built during the implementation phase: the Support Point, located at the Port of Leixões, consisting of a laboratory and a small workshop, and the research vessel Mar Profundo, currently docked at the Leça da Palmeira Marina.
