Land next to Matosinhos refinery loses military use

The decision was taken because the refinery is being demolished and therefore does not require reinforced security.

The government has decided to end military service on the land neighbouring the former Matosinhos refinery, which is in the process of being demolished, according to a publication in the Diário da República.

The land will no longer have military service because the refinery is in the process of being demolished and there are therefore no imminent dangers in relation to ‘the nature and dangerousness of the products industrialised and stored there’, which required the protection of people and goods in the neighbouring areas, according to the announcement.

‘Following the closure of the oil refining activity at the Matosinhos refinery in 2021, and as it is in the process of being converted into a logistics park, both the previously existing industrial context and the assumptions that gave rise to the creation of this military easement have changed,’ explains the announcement.

The closure was announced by Galp in 2020 and materialised the following year, which at the time was justified by the sustainability challenges and characteristics of the facilities, in line with the European and global refining context.
