"We received information that there is no risk of spill, but we cannot lower our guard until the incident is overcome," said Luísa Salgueiro during the public meeting of the municipal executive, after being questioned by the councilmen of the PCP, Movement António Parada SIM and PSD about this incident and possible environmental problems.
On Tuesday, March 21, the ship Greta K, carrying fuel, caught fire off Foz do Douro, in Porto.
This morning, in statements to Lusa, Captain Silva Rocha said that the ship is about 20 kilometers from the coastline, off the Port of Leixões, being assisted by two port tugboats and lifeboats and the Maritime Police.
The mayor considered that this type of accident leaves "everyone startled" because the risk of any environmental problem is always very high.
"But we will activate all mechanisms so that this can be avoided," she said.
Luísa Salgueiro explained that the management of the accident is not the responsibility of Matosinhos, in the district of Porto, but the municipality has made its teams available.
The accident with this ship, which came from Sines, forces us to reflect on the consequences of the closure of the Galp refinery in Leça da Palmeira, Matosinhos, she commented.
Still on the subject of incidents, after being questioned by the PCP councilman, José Pedro Rodrigues, about the occurrence of two small fires in two schools in Matosinhos, Luísa Salgueiro revealed that she is completing the survey of self-protection measures in the municipality's schools.
In addition, the mayor revealed that the procedure for contracting new protection measures to strengthen these responses in educational establishments is open.
